I recently found this watercolor in my sketchbook. It was really funny to see so many brassieres, different colors, shapes and sizes, sold on the sidewalk. Every three shops, it seemed, was selling bras. Why?

I have published this painting before. I'm repeating it, to celebrate the Award of Excellence obtained today from the San Diego Portrait Society. I'm happy.
I recently visited the studio of La Jolla oil painter Sebastian Capella. He had signs all over saying : "Observe more...paint less", "Paint by masses", "Squint", and "Stay longer in the preliminary stages". Great advice!!! I wish I could always remember to do that!

In the South of France, the walls of certain caves are painted with images of animals. In Lascaux there are 364 images of horses. While they painted they ate deer meat. There are no pictures of deer, why? In this era, painters learned from other painters, the technique and style. They copied their masters...for thousands of years without creating something new....why?

Silver Lake, California, inkwash, 4x6. This lake was totally frozen, enough for us to ice-skate and tennis-shoes skate on the lake. We were a family group of three generations playing on the frozen lake, with only two pairs of skates, so we took turns using them. The rest of us "skated" on our tennis shoes, it was very beautiful and fun! About once a year I force myself to do only value sketches for a while. A lot to be learned by concentrating on value sketches.

This "auberge" or family hotel/restaurant, was started by the lady, still the owner, about 50 years ago. She's now in her 90s, still peeling carrots in the kitchen, but her children and grandchildren run most of the operation. She visits with the clients, when you are sitting there she comes by, table by table, chats a little with each customer, very well presented, then goes back and works some more. Lovely lady, with a positive attitude about life and work.

Early Training, watercolor, 7x5, available. My granddaughter Marina and her friend were looking at shoes at a store in Marbella last summer, and I took several photographs. I later used them to paint some small watercolors and a couple of oils on canvas. This is one of the watercolors. Marbella is a high class summer resort in the south of Spain, with nice beaches, lovely shops, and a white marble esplanade between the main beach and the quaint old town shopping area, with about ten original Salvador Dali sculptures. Expensive and beautiful town to visit.

Joan Miro's exhibition in Baden-Baden (Germany) in 2010, had many pieces of his theme: women, stars, and birds. I also saw two series of "slow paintings" and some "spontaneous paintings" as he called them. It was a wonderful show! And the city of Baden-Baden itself is a garden of delights!

Sorry for the superlatives, but I had not heard too much comments about the beauty of Burgos, while other cities in Spain are very famous for their beauty, like Sevilla, Toledo, and others. Maybe that's why Burgos took me by surprise so much. The river and park along the river is magnificent, with modern statues, and extremely well kept gardens. The cultural life and friendliness of its inhabitants make Burgos, in the north of Spain, a city well worth visiting.

Balboa Park, in the city of San Diego, California, is the "largest urban park in the world" I read this morning at the San Diego History Museum. Size matters, I know, but beauty matters more, and Balboa Park is beautiful! My little watercolor from a few years ago, painted on location at the main fountain in front of the Museum of Art says nothing compared to the beauty of this park, its gardens, buildings and museums.

Pinecove, Idyllwild, California. watercolor, 5x7" (12x17cm.) This is the very first painting I ever exhibited at an art gallery. I used to paint and draw just for myself, as a hobby I enjoyed on weekends. I painted this watercolor sitting on the deck of this beautiful house in Pinecove we used to own, in 1997. A friend, who is a watercolor artist, insisted I enter a couple of paintings in a South Bay Watercolor Society contest. I did thanks to him, Etti Andreani, and this one got accepted. I had tasted the sweet flavor of shows and exhibitions, and they haven't stopped since then, 14 years ago. Needless to say, this painting is not for sale. I cherish it.

Recordando a Piazzola, watercolor, 16x12" (40x30cm.) Available. This painting has been juried in the December show at the San Diego Watercolor Society, San Diego, California. When I was in the International Watercolor Festival in Brioude, France, this past July, I saw an artist complete a watercolor with a sponge, and decided to try it. "Recordando a Piazzola" was painted using no pencil, and no brush. I did the entire painting just with a sponge. I have painted several watercolors in this style and I must say it is not easy!!!

Their beautiful house reflects their traveling experiences, and their love for beauty, stability, organization and order. This was my room/bed while I stayed there in July this year. Chantilly is a lovely town north of Paris, in France. Chantilly is famous for their thouroughbred horses, their castle, and now...this Blog which mentions it!

In 1926 Salvador Dali was expelled from the Academia de Bellas Artes, in Spain, for his refusal to sit for examinations with the professors of the moment. He claimed they were idiots and didn't know a thing about art. We have forgotten those professors' names....while we know very well who Salvador Dali is: a genius.

Encontre este libro en una libreria de libros usados en Hillcrest, un barrio bohemio de San Diego, California. El autor habla de la naturaleza doble de la creacion artistica: en un primer nivel, es un record de la vision plastica del artista. A otro nivel, dice Zucker, el medio ambiente, las tradiciones, las circumstancias politicas y economicas, las creencias religiosas, etc. ejercen una influencia importante en las creaciones del/a artista.

Designed by Eiffel, a couple of years difference with the famous Tower in Paris, this bridge looks like the Eiffel Tower lying down! I'm thinking of Delacroix, and his incredible infancy full of accidents. Few babies have gone through what he did: by the age of three, Eugene Delacroix had survived being hung, almost drowned, poisoned, and strangled.

This painting is totally autobiographic and just for fun. My friend Mireille and I had bought these hats in Paris, and decided to go for a picnic near this beautiful lazy river: "La Nonette", in Chantilly, about 30 km. north of Paris. We had a lot of fun trying to place the camera so that we could get our picture taken. Finally we did. Last week, I decided to paint our fun picnic experience, and...voila! "Les Vedettes de la Nonette".

Croquis rapidos de gente a tu alrededor es una buena manera de "mantener la mano caliente", como recomendaba Sorolla. Yo pinto pequenas acuarelas en el tren, el avion, el auto mientras otro conduce, en el aeropuerto, parques, jardines, restaurantes, etc. Muy buena practica.

I've recently read the biography of Camille Claudel by Anne Delbee, titled: "Une Femme" (in French: A Woman). The author tells us that C.C. run away from home for the first time at 11. Her mother did not like her and did not love her. Her mother always told Camille that she was influenced by the devil, with such brilliant eyes, that could see what others couldn't. Camille Claudel, the most talented sculptress of the 20th Century, lived the last 30 years of her life in an asylum, forcefully sent in by her mother soon after her father's death. Her father always protected her.

Odilon Redon (1840-1916) produced a considerable amount of work in black and white, charcoal, and lithographs with fantastic visions. "I've made art my way" he's said. His son Jean was born in 1886, and died 6 months later. He worked only in black. Two and a half years later, his second son, Ari, was born. "Finally, everything is fine" he said, and started using color in his paintings.

This is my version of a famous bridge over a waterfall in this area of the French Pyrenees, which used to be part of the walking path to Spain in the Middle Ages. This was part of the Road to Santiago de Compostela. Today, there's a lovely restaurant, picnic area, and more walking paths, higher up to the Lake de Gaube. Spain is several miles higher up the mountain.

Burgos is a beautiful town in the north of Spain, where I was last week for a few days. This water fountain by the river and park dances, changing constantly, surprising the passers by. At night, the lights dance in unison with the waters. A modern building with details in red behind gives a good color contrast.

Chloe, pastel, 64x45cm. Sold. This painting is in exhibition at the Bibliotheque Municipale de Cauterets, France, for a few days. Little Chloe posed for me/played with her father, while I took pictures of her. It was a commission from her grandmother. When I showed the painting half-way to her grandmother for approval, I learned that Chloe has a genetic disease. I finished the painting with my heart, more than my fingers, directing the pastel chalks.

I love challenges, and discovery, so I bought many interesting old book covers, to have a choice, and started playing with them, using some of the words on the cover as inspiration. I recently saw an exhibition of pastel paintings by Cayetano de Arquer Buigas, in Tarbes, France. Beautiful pastels, he has a wide range of themes, but his favorite topic is the female figure, particularly the neck and back. He doesn't want to belong to any special movement, he likes to paint the times we live, as he feels it.
