Obsession Fanatique

Obsession Fanatique, oil on canvas, 36x28 cm. This is the 9th oil painting I publish here of the 13 oils and 8 watercolors that are hanging at the Bibliotheque Municipal de Cauterets at this moment. The exposition opens tomorrow September 1st, and it runs till the end of October. They are all landscapes, inspired by the views of the town and the surrounding mountains, and my recent reading of Moliere's "L'Ecole des Femmes". Este es el noveno oleo que publico aqui de los 13 oleos y 8 acuarelas que estan colgando en este momento en la Biblioteca Municipal de Cauterets. Esta exposicion abre manana 1ro. de setiembre, y sigue hasta fines de octubre. He presentado todos paisajes, inspirados por las vistas de la ciudad y las montanas de los alrededores, y por mi lectura reciente de "L'Ecole de Femmes" de Moliere.

E.H. Gombrich, in The Story of Art, and the art of the story, claims that the illussionism of Greek art was rooted in the illussionism of their story-telling style. E.H. Le Reve

Joseph Campbell (1904-1987) explains that there exist throughout the many local myths and stories of the world certain pervasive patterns of action: for example, an abandoned child who eventually claims great power; or the hero whose journey takes him through various tests and setbacks before finding self-knowledge. His doctrine: "Myth is primal, coherent, and all-explanatory". Joseph Campbell explica que existen ciertos modelos de mitos e historias comunes a todas las culturas del mundo: por ejemplo: el nino abandonado que a la larga consigue gran poder; o el heroe cuyos viajes lo llevan a traves de varias pruebas y problemas antes de encontrar el conocimiento de si mismo. Esta es su doctrina: "El mito es primordial, coherente, y lo explica todo".

L'Imagination

The Swiss psychologist Carl Jung (1875-1961) talked about the "collective unconscious"--a worldwide reservoir of archetypal symbols and stories in which all human minds might find echoes of their own dreams or experiences. El psicologo suizo Carl Jung hablaba de la "conciencia colectiva"--una reserva mundial de historias y simbolos arquetipicos en las cuales todas las mentes humanas encuentran un eco de sus propios suenos y experiencias.

The activity of story-telling is basic to human coexistence. Levi-Strauss tried to prove that myths and rites are generated from a primal human craving to impose order upon the world. He conducted research among ancient storytelling traditions in North and South America. La actividad de contar cuentos es basica a la existencia humana. This is a view of our Pont d'Espagna, a lovely waterfall here near Cauterets, in France, and another one of the oils I'm presenting next week for the Chimeres show. "The mirror is the master of painters" said Leaonardo da Vinci. But...is it? Exaggeration and distortion are part of the portrait making process, and for some artists like Francis Bacon, it is actually the only way of getting a "truthful record of appearance". "El espejo es el maestro de los pintores" dijo Leonardo da Vinci. Pero...lo es realmente? Again, I will refer to Paul Cezanne, since I can relate to his desire to be true to what he saw and also to the circumstances in which reality dictates how it must be seen. To celebrate both permanence and transience, and to honor the uniqueness of the artist's vision (which Cezanne called his "petite sensation") and the universality of what is actually seen, tormented Cezanne, and worries every artist I know. Otra vez me refiero a Paul Cezanne, puesto que puedo comprender su deseo de representar lo que vio y tambien de expresar las circumstancias en las que la realidad dicta como debe ser visto. Celebrar ambos, lo permanente y lo transciente, y respetar la vision unica del artista (la que Cezanne llamo su "petite sensation") y la universalidad de lo que esta siendo visto, atormentaba a Cezanne, y preocupa a toda (todo) artista que conozco.

Reading Sister Wendy Beckett's Joy Lasts, on the Spiritual in Art, I've learned that in Cezanne's work appearance is dealt with honesty and effort, and that he felt the world was constantly changing. Light wanes and waxes, shadows move, if the artist moves one step to the left or to the right, she's looking at a different scene. Leyendo "Joy Lasts, on the Spiritual in Art", por la hermana Wendy Beckett, he aprendido que en el trabajo de Cezanne la apariencia es tratada con honestidad y esfuerzo. Esta es la segunda pintura que publico de la exhibicion "Quimeras", que abre el 1 de setiembre y va hasta el 28 de octubre, 2010, en la Bibliotheque Municipale de Cauterets, Francia.

My creative process always starts with a strong emotion, the way I see the light hit somebody, or something. When I walk the Pyrenees mountains, around Cauterets and other towns, I often find landscapes that inspire me to make a quick drawing or watercolor, take pictures. Later in my studio I utilize oil, watercolor, pastel, etc. to try to translate my feelings to the canvas or paper. The emotion of the moment always comes first. Mi proceso creativo siempre comienza con una emocion fuerte, la manera que la luz toca a algo o alguien. Cuando camino por las montanas de los Pirineos, alrededor de Cauterets y otros pueblos, a menudo encuentro paisajes que me inspiran a hacer un bosquejo o una acuarela rapida, tomar fotos. Luego en mi estudio utilizo oleo, acuarela, pastel, etc. para tratar de traducir mis sentimientos a la tela o al papel. La emocion del momento siempre viene primero.

Prevoir l'aventure

This painting is one of twenty new paintings I'm presenting in "CHIMERES", solo show at the Bibliotheque Municipale de Cauterets, France, opening next Wednesday, September 1st, continuing till the end of October. Este oleo es uno de las veinte pinturas nuevas que presento en "Quimeras", exhibicion individual en la Biblioteca Municipal de Cauterets, Francia, que abre el proximo miercoles 1 de septiembre y continuara hasta fines de octubre.

My inspiration for "Chimeres" comes from the connection I've felt between the primitive and feminine beauty of the Pyrenees, and Moliere's "L'Ecole des Femmes", where the subject is the discovery of love. Both suggest a certain state of grace. For the titles of my work for this exhibition, I've chosen words and expressions from "L'Ecole des Femmes". I hope Moliere agrees... Mi inspiracion para "Quimeras" viene de la coneccion que he sentido entre la belleza femenina primitiva de los Pirineos, y la obra de Moliere "Escuela de Mujeres", donde el sujeto es el descubrimiento del amor. Ambos sugieren un cierto estado de gracia. Para los titulos de mi trabajo para esta exhibicion he elegido palabras y expresiones de "Escuela de Mujeres". Espero que Moliere este de acuerdo....

Cafe de la Poste

Cafe de la Poste, watercolor, 30x25 cm. This is in Saint Savin, French Pyrenees. I did this watercolor in 2007 for a show right there, behind the sign, where the Au Village gallery is. Hice esta acuarela en 2007 para una exhibicion que tuve alli mismo, atras del letrero, donde esta la galeria "Au Village".

On the right is the Saint Savin church, from the 13th C. Visitors from all over the world come here daily to visit this church. Saint Savin is about 20 km. from Lourdes, up on a hill with a fantastic view of the valley. A la derecha esta la iglesia de Saint Savin, del siglo 13. Visitantes de todo el munco vienen aqui a diario a visitar esta iglesia. Saint Savin esta unos 20 km. de Lourdes, arriba de una colina, con una vista fantastica del valle.

Today I'll talk about Nikki de Saint Phalle. I saw a documentary last night about her, and I saw a large exhibit of her work, in Rome, last November. She was extremely creative, and enjoyed large pieces. She said that she left her conservative family to live the free artist life, and then when she was successful, people like her family were buying her work and placing them in their conservative homes. She thought that was funny. Everybody loves her Nanas. Hoy voy a hablar de Nikki de Saint Phalle. Anoche vi un documental sobre ella, y el ano pasado vi una gran exhibicion de su obra, en Roma. Ella era muy creativa, y le gustaba hacer piezas grandes. Dijo una vez que habia dejado su familia conservadora para vivir la vida libre de una artista, y ahora que tenia exito, gente como su familia compraba su trabajo y lo ponia en sus casas conservadoras. Le parecia muy gracioso. A todos nos gustan mucho sus Nanas.

Kiss Me

MichelAngelo Buonarotti always shows the contrast between man and nature in his work. In his poems he expresses his troubled love life. While painting the Sistine Chapel he kept correspondance with Vittoria Colonna. Thought you'd like to know.... Miguel Angel Buonarotti siempre muestra el contraste entre el hombre y la naturaleza en su trabajo. En sus poemas, el expresa su turbulenta vida amorosa. Mientras pintaba la Capilla Sistina mantuvo correspondencia con Vittoria Colonna. Pense que te gustaria saberlo....

The Sforza Chapel in Santa Maria Maggiore, in Rome, is MichelAngelo Buonarotti's last masterpiece. He died when it was in construction, but he had designs in his possession which were followed precisely. The Sforza Chapel is one of the highest peaks in the amazing spatial complexity of M.B.'s late works. La Capilla Sforza en Santa Maria Maggiore, en Roma, es la ultima obra de arte de MichelAngelo Buonarotti. El murio cuando estaba en construccion, pero habia dejado disenos que se siguieron a la perfeccion. La Capilla Sforza es uno de los picos mas altos en la increible complejidad espacial de los ultimos trabajos de M.B.

This is one of the tangos in my "Tango" series, some of them will be shown on September 12th at the San Diego Polo Club in San Diego, California. Este es uno de los tangos en mi serie: Tangos. Cascade de Loutour

Cascade de Loutour, watercolor, 16x12" (40x30 cm.) Painted plein air, sprinkled by the water of this beautiful waterfall in the Pyrenees. Esta acuarela de la Cascada de Loutour fue pintada al aire libre, salpicada por el agua de esta hermosa cascada en los Pirineos. The esthetic process that governs our perception makes a mental synthesis of a landscape. We "produce " it on paper or canvas as a new item, a new product, a composite of what's in front of us, the light it receives, and all our personal history (education, previous experiences, emotional state, etc.) that contribute to the way we interprete what we see. In that sense, every person "sees" a different view. El proceso estetico que gobierna nuestra percepcion hace una sintesis mental de un paisaje. Lo "producimos" sobre papel o tela como una cosa nueva, un producto nuevo, una mezcla de lo que esta al frente de nosotros, la luz que recibe, y toda nuestra historia personal (educacion, experiencias previas, estado emocional, etc.) que contribuyen a la manera en que interpretamos lo que vemos. En este sentido, cada persona "ve" una vista diferente.

Le Pont d'Orthez

This bridge is in Orthez, France, near the Pyrenees, about one hour from Lourdes. Fue exhibido en la galeria "Au Village", en Saint-Savin, luego en la Bibliotheque Municipale de Cauterets al ano siguiente. Este puente esta en Orthez, Francia, cerca de los Pirineos, a una hora de Lourdes.

Leonardo da Vinci, in his treatise: Essays on Painting, insists that the painter, to be really good, must represent "exactly the truth and exactitud of the works of nature, the imitations must be irreprochable. But what then with the representation of angels, or the virgin? How do we know how to represent them? Leonardo da Vinci, en su tratado sobre pintura, insistia que la representacion debe ser exactamente la verdad, irreprochable. Pero entonces que pasa con la representacion de los angeles, o la virgen? Como sabemos como epresentarlos?

I' in the French Pyrenees, a place I love, while missing California, a place I love. De mi cuaderno de bosquejos y pinturas rapidas en acuarela. Back to my comments about Landscapes, I've read that Oscar Wilde suggested that " life imitates nature, and nature invents itself". Landscapes as images, establish an enigm: we try to find out if they are simple immitations of nature in pigment and dessign, an intelligent representation, or simply a presentation. The question of landscape also presents the question of nature, since without the perception of it, there is no nature. De vuelta a mis comentarios sobre el Paisaje, he leido que Oscar Wilde sugirio que "la vida imita la naturaleza, y la naturaleza se inventa a si misma". El Paisaje como imagen establece un enigma: tratamos de descubrir si el paisaje es una simple imitacion de la naturaleza en pigmento y dibujo, una representacion inteligente, o simplemente una presentacion. El problema de Paisaje tambien presenta el problema de naturaleza, pues sin la perception de ella, no hay naturaleza.

Marie dans le train

Marie dans le train, is another quick sketch of a train companion, done a few days ago, like the last Blog entry. Este es otro bosquejo rapido de una companera de viaje hecho en el tren hace unos dias, como el de mi ultima entrada de Blog.

Landscape has always existed and continues, because it supports our dreams, nostalgic feelings, and meditation. Today's public loves landscapes. Apparently, the alchimists contributed to the emergence of "landscapes" as we consider the term, due to their studies of the combination of air, water, earth and fire as expressions of Nature. El Paisaje siempre ha existido y continua, porque apoya nuestros suenos, sentimientos nostalgicos, y meditacion. El publico de hoy adora los paisajes. Aparentemente, los alquimistas contribuyeron a este surgimiento del "paisaje", como lo consideramos hoy, debido a sus estudios de la combinacion del aire, agua, tierra y fuego como expresiones de la Naturaleza.

Nap Time

Nap Time, monochrome watercolor, 4x6", is a quick sketch of an unsuspecting subject. I did it last week, on the train from Bayone to Lourdes, in France. The young man was taking a nap. The ring of my notebook seems to hook his face and hand. Tiempo de Siesta, acuarela monocromatica, fue un bosquejo rapido de un sujeto inocente. Lo hice la semana pasada, en el tren de Bayone a Lourdes, en Francia. El joven estaba dormido. El anillo de mi cuaderno pareciera hacer un gancho entre su cara y su mano.

Speaking of Landscape, it's interesting to note that it was a favorite subject of the followers of Futurist theories at the beginning of the 20thC., in part due to the influence of photography, and of the primitive arts. Hablando de Paisaje, es interesante notar que fue un sujeto favorito de los seguidores de teorias Futuristas al principio del siglo 20, debido en parte a la influencia de la fotografi, y de las artes primitivas.

Iglesia Maria Auxiliadora

At the Musee d'Art de Ceret, there was an exhibition about Landscapes of the town and its surroundings last year. Landscapes of Ceret by Matisse, Soutine, Picasso, Braque, Pierre Brune, Kremegne, Chagall, Juan Gris, and many other well known artists. Landscape was in fashion in the XIXth Century, even beginning of XXth. En el Musee d'Art de Ceret, habia una exhibicion de Paisajes de la ciudad y sus alrededores, el ano pasado. Paisajes pintados por Matisse, Soutine, Picasso, Braque, Pierre Brune, Kremegne, Chagall, Juan Gris, y muchos otros artistas bien conocidos. El paisaje estaba de moda a fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX.

El Alquimista

El Alquimista, pastel, 40x30cm. This portrait of Paulo Cohelo, made in pastel and appreciation for his words on his books, was done in 2007. It is now at "Au Village Galerie et Boutique", in Saint-Savin, France. Este retrato de Paulo Cohelo lo hice con pasteles y agradecimiento por sus palabras en sus libros. Lo complete en 2007. In "By the River Piedras I sat Down and Cried", Paulo Cohelo says: "If we are not born again, if we don't look again at life with the innocence and enthusiasm of childhood, it makes no sense to continue living." I've just finished reading "L'Ecole des Femmes" de Moliere. It's a comedy, and a psychological study at the same time. Moliere wrote about a young woman's awakening to love, against the destiny that had been set for her more than 200 years before "women's lib". Acabo de terminar de leer "L'Ecole des Femmes" de Moliere. Es una comedia, y un estudio psicologico a la vez. Moliere escribio sobre el despertar al amor de una mujer joven, contra el futuro que el destino le habia preparado mas de 200 anos antes de la "liberacion femenina".

Con esta pintura del rio de montana de Cauterets, estoy celebrando mi llegada a Cauterets hace unos dias, y los seis meses de mi Blog diario, comenzado el 1ro. de febrero.


Only in France: There is a delicious fig marmelade called "Pope Balls". The story goes that in the year 1305, after the election of Pope Clement V, the Sacred College didn't want to make a mistake, due to certain Popes with affeminate traits, so they made Clement sit on a throne with holes. A cardinal was in charge of making sure he had all "his attributes", and after checking Clement, he declared, in Latin: "Clement has a good pair, and they hang like figs!" This is the reason for the name "pope balls" for figs from the XIV Century! Solo en Francia: Hay aqui una deliciosa mermelada llamada "Bolas de Papa". Segun la historia, en el ano 1305, luego de la eleccion del Papa Clemente V, El Sagrado Colegio no quiso cometer un error, debido a ciertos Papas afeminados, e hicieron sentar a Clemente en un trono agujereado. Un cardenal estaba a cargo de asegurarse que el Papa tuviera todos sus "atributos", y luego de tocar cuidadosamente a Clemente, el declaro, en latin: "Clemente tiene un buen par, y cuelgan como higos!" Esta es la razon del nombre "bolas de Papa" para los higos, desde el Siglo XIV!

California Girl

She was a waitress in a restaurant at Laguna Beach, California, when I saw her. Her beauty, bright colors and personal attitude struck me so, I asked her permission to photograph and sketch her. Este pastel fue exhibido en Imaginatiff, Francia, en el 2008. Ahora esta en la Galeria Bordenave, Francia. Ella era una servidora en un restaurante en Laguna Beach, California, cuando yo la vi. Su belleza, sus colores brillantes y actitud personal me llamaron mucho la atencion, y le pedi permiso para fotografiarla y dibujarla.

Le Griot

Highly respected, "le Griot" is a shaman, in some French speaking countries of Africa. He is wise and knowledgeable about plants, helping the sick of body and mind with his knowledge, his beliefs, his faith, and his common sense. Muy respetado, "le Griot" es un curandero inteligente y sabio, en algunos paises de habla frances en Africa. El es sabio, conoce mucho de plantas, y ayuda al enfermo de cuerpo y mente con su conocimiento, sus creencias, su fe, y su sentido comun.

Mucha's woman

Mucha's woman, is a quick pastel sketch I did in my art notebook last year, during my visit to the Alphonse Mucha art exhibit at the Salamanca Museum of Art, in Salamanca, Spain. This is a copy of a Mucha painting. Mujer de Mucha, es un pastel bosquejado rapidamente en mi cuaderno de notas de arte el ano pasado, durante mi visita a la exhibicion de Alphonse Mucha en el Museo de Arte de Salamanca, en Espana. Esta es una copia de una pintura de Mucha.


Alphonse Mucha was born in Tchekoslovakia, and triumphed in Paris in the 1920s and 30s. He applied a theatrical aspect to all his creations, so the public became an audience to his art.
