En Route

En Route, small pencil sketch of my friend Marie Christine driving. I usually sketch my family and friends while they are busy in some activity. Like Joaquin Sorolla used to say, sketching keeps the hand warm.

I recently read LAS CHICAS DEL OLEO (Girls of the huile), by Isabel del Rio. This book talks about female painters and sculptors before 1789. The author cites an extensive list of female artists before the French Revolution, and claims that women were actually more free to dedicated themselves to artistic endeavors before than after 1789. She insists that Artemisia Gentileschi, Rosalba Carriera, and many others I don't have the room here to mention, were not exceptions. Isabel del Rio documents her thesis extensively, claiming that "it was not their time but ours the one that's interested in transmitting a negative view of women's past experiences in art".

La autora cita una lista extensa de artistas mujeres antes de la Revolucion Francesa, y nos dice que las mujeres en realidad eran mas libres de dedicarse a actividades artisticas antes de 1789.
