L'ESPLANADE DES OEUFS, watercolor

L'Esplanade des Oeufs, watercolor, 22x28 in. Started on location, plein air, at the center of the town of Cauterets, France. I finished it later, since I needed several layers of watercolor, and had to let it dry in between layers. Also, I used masking fluid to protect the paper for the water jets of the new fountain.

This watercolor was just exhibited at the Montrabé Art Exhibition in Montrabé, France. It is now on its way to the Bibliothéque de Cauterets, France.

This lake "lac de Gaube" is after the famous waterfalls "Pont d'Espagne", near Cauterets, France. Lisa   Marie Evans is a video artist who did a creative residency with me. At the end of her residency, offered a film in creative animation, presented at  the Bibliotheque de Cauterets. It was very well received.

The original is a horizontal painting, bigger and wider than  this photo. It is hanging in the show at the Bibliotheque de Cauterets, France, and I don't have access to the original photograph at the moment. It was painted in Perugia, Italy, this summer.

LA PLAGE, BREST, FRANCE, watercolor

La Plage, Brest, France, watercolor, 6x9 in. Now in exhibition and for sale at the Bibliotheque de Cauterets, France.

You probably already know this, so this is only a reminder: the three primary colors are.... very good! red, blue and yellow. And the three secondary colors? Excellent! : orange, violet, and green! And the tertiary colors? a little help: red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet. Now the complementary colors: red/green, blue/orange, and yellow/violet. Always remember the complementary colors are at OPPOSITE ends on the color wheel.  Complementary colors are very important, and it is useful to place them close to one another, to make that area brighter and more intense. Remember the colors you use can affect the mood or feelings about a subject.

Will Gompertz, in WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?: 150 years of Modern Art in the Blink of An Eye, says that the problem we face with a new work of art is one of comprehension. He says that art is like a game, and you need to know the rules and regulations. I find this comparison quite clever. There is also a chart at the beginning, that spans from 1870 to today. It's colorful and comprehensive, it has helped me understand some of the relationships between and among the different "isms" during the 20th Century.

Vernissage (opening reception) is on Friday, September 6, 5:30-730 pm. Come on and join me!! Watercolor above is of the Cirque de Gavarnie, in the Haute Pyrénées, France.

I have recently read: Venise - Aquarelles de Turner,  published by the British Museum. It has fantastic pictures of Turner's series of watercolors of Venice. I read that Turner used to draw non-stop in his sketchbook. When he died in 1851, there was a collection of more than three hundred sketchbooks!
