Like "Nick K. ", one of my old portraits I found a few days ago, while re-organizing my art-work: my friend Regina. I have painted my family and friends for years! Even in high school, in Argentina, whenever we had a free period because the teacher was absent, I would do portraits of my friends.

Visiting Los Angeles recently, I re-"discovered" the downtown area, how beautiful it is now! I used to work there some years ago, but have not been living the constant renovation of the downtown area for ten or so years, so it came as a surprise. The Staples Center, the ice-skating rink, the lights, the screens, and the number of people braving the cold, just walking around and enjoying the views. Magnificent!

I have been having fun re-organizing my artwork. I found this old portrait I did of my friend Nick in 1996.

Reading the latest Artist's Magazine, I found a comment about Urban Sketchers (www.urbansketchers.org) a non-profit organization devoted to fostering the art of on-location drawing. Check it out and get inspired. Sketching everywhere you go helps you remember the location so much better than just taking a picture of it!

Good News!

Good News!, ink, pencil and charcoal, March page of my 2011 Sketchbook: "Travel With Minnie", the original will be  in Oakland, CA, from June 1-20...check it out!

My original pencil and pastel portrait of Leonardo da Vinci, is 20x16, then I photographed my painting, and printed and pasted it on that page of my notebook. I visited the exhibition in iami8bit gallery, 2147 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, this past weekend, it was awesome! On Friday, there were long lines of people to get a library card with which you could check out two sketchbooks and read them there, then come back for more. I went with my friend Lily, we each checked out two notebooks, then exchanged them with neighbors sitting up the stairs, had a glass of wine, and enjoyed the energy, good humor, concentration, friendship, and wonderful vibes coming from everybody there! The Sketchbook Project has a fantastic organization, way to go!!!

In addition to a physics and a chemistry, color has a geography. Let's take indigo as an example: In the Middle Ages, the best indigo blue came from Baghdad, in modern Iraq. The blue that is still the most expensive natural pigment is manufactured from the semi-precious lapiz-lazuli, until recently mined in Afghanistan only. It is often called "ultramarine", because it comes from "beyond the sea".

Isabel Guerra en el Museo del Dibujo, inkwash, 29x21cm. This is my copy in ink-wash, in my travel journal, of Isabel Guerra's pencil drawing called: "Dama Pobreza", 100x70cm. I saw this beautiful pencil drawing at the Museo del Dibujo Castillo de Larres, in Larres, Spain, about a month ago. This castle/museum is near Jaca, in north-east Spain. There are about 350 excellent drawings and paintings, distributed in 14 rooms. What a treat to be able to see all these masterpieces!

He visto este hermosisimo dibujo a lapiz en el Museo del Dibujo Castillo de Larres, en Larres, Espana, hace cerca de un mes. Este castillo/museo esta cerca de Jaca, en el nor-este de Espana. Hay unos 350 dibujos y pinturas, distribuidos en 14 salas. Que delicia poder ver estas obras de arte!
