Consider where the light comes from. Some light sources for your painting could be: 1. Sunlight : it radiates in all directions. 2. Candlelight: it also radiates in all directions, but it is much weaker, so it illuminates only a small area. 3. Artificial light: could be specific in one direction from a lamp or spotlight, or generalized coming up from above. 4. Reflected light: It can be mysterious and romantic, like the light of the moon. Reflected light is not as intense as direct light. Most objects, including human skin, reflect light to some degree, becoming secondary light sources themselves.
Piensa de donde viene la luz. Algunas fuentes de luz para tu pintura pueden ser: 1. La luz del sol: irradia en todas direcciones. 2. La luz de una vela: tambien irradia en todas direcciones, but mucho mas debil, asi que solo ilumina una zona pequena. 3. Luz artificial: puede ser especifica en una direccion, proviniendo de una lampara, o mas generalizada viniendo de arriba. 4. Luz reflejada: Puede ser misteriosa y romantica, como la luz de la luna. La luz reflejada no es tan intensa como la luz directa. La mayoria de los objetos, incluyendo la piel humana, refleja la luz hasta cierto punto, llegando a ser ellos mismos fuentes secundarias de luz.

Refugee

I recently taught a workshop in Verfeil, France, on the subject of LIGHT.
Some things to remember: Light affects every aspect of the painting process. Light makes things happen. It determines shape and form, reveals color and defines texture. It is the painter's primary tool for directing the attention of the viewer! It really separates the magical from the mediocre. Don't forget that reality is just an illusion processed through our perceptions. You, the artist, can change reality to achieve a more aesthetic effect. Go ahead! Experiment!
Hace poco ensene un curso en Verfeil, Francia, sobre el tema de la LUZ. Algunas cosas para recordar: La luz afecta todos los aspectos del proceso de la pintura. La luz determina lo que ocurre. La luz detalla el contorno y la forma, revela el color y define la textura. Es la primera herramienta del pintor para dirigir la atencion del observador! Realmente separa lo magico de lo mediocre. No nos olvidemos que la realidad es solo una ilusion procesada por nuestras percepciones. Tu, la artista, puedes alterar la realidad para producir un efecto mas estetico. Vamos! A experimentar!

Today, an anecdote from this trip: When I was in Boquete, Panama, four months ago, I fell down two steps on cement. I hit my left knee pretty bad. The blood and scrape was ok, but the pain and swelling has continued. In the past two weeks I've been walking and carrying books and...you guessed: art materials! a lot, and my knee got worse. So today I had to go to the doctor.
Hoy les contare una anecdota de este viaje: Cuando estuve en Boquete, Panama, hace cuatro meses, me cai dos escalones al piso de cemento. Me golpee feo mi rodilla izquierda. Raspon, sangre, y lo peor fue el dolor y la hinchazon que han continuado. En las ultimas dos semanas he caminado mucho y acarreado muchos libros y....por supuesto: material de pintura!, y mi rodilla empeoro. Asi que hoy decidi ir a ver a un medico.

I have no health insurance in Spain, while I do in California. At 1:00pm this afternoon I went to the Hospital Virgen del Rocio, in Sevilla, with a book to read in the waiting room. I was greeted very friendly, asked my name and address, a few questions, and to take a seat. There were about 30 people waiting. They were calling people's names over a loudspeaker, 10 minutes of reading, they called my name. They took x-rays of both my knees. As I was coming out of radiology, a young man asked me to follow him (Of course I did!!!) He was Dr. Julio Bautista, who after examining me, suggested a needle to be inserted in my left knee to extract the liquid, and insert calming and anti-inflamatory medicine. He explained everything very well. I accepted his suggestion, he performed the operation with the help of a male nurse, wrapped my knee in an elastic band, gave me instructions to follow in the next 10 days, and I left. It was 2:25 pm. I had asked several times how much, where, I had to pay something. No charge, only politeness and smiles.
No tengo seguro de salud en Espana, si lo tengo en California. A la una de la tarde de hoy viernes, fui al Hospital Virgen del Rocio, en Sevilla, con un libro para leer en la sala de espera. Me atendieron muy amablemente, me preguntaron mi nombre y direccion, otras pocas preguntas, y que me sentara. Habia unas 30 personas esperando. Llamaban a la gente por un altoparlante, luego de leer unos diez minutos, llamaron mi nombre. Me sacaron x-rays de ambas rodillas. Al salir de radiologia, un hombre joven y buen mozo me pidio que lo siguiera (Por supuesto que lo hice!!!!) Era el Dr. Julio Bautista, quien luego de examinarme, me sugirio insertar una aguja en mi rodilla izquierda para sacar el liquido, e insertar medicina calmante y anti-inflamatoria. Me explico todo muy bien. Yo acepte su sugerencia, el hizo la operacion con la ayuda de un enfermero, envolvio mi rodilla en una gasa elastica, me dio instructiones a seguir durante los proximos 10 dias, y sali. Eran las 2:25 de la tarde. Pregunte varias veces cuanto y donde tenia que pagar algo. Sin cargo, gratis, solo amabilidad y sonrisas.

Winds of Childhood

I had already exhibited in this Blog a few months ago, I normally don't repeat paintings, but this one, I will. Esta pintura al pastel acaba de ser aceptada en la exhibicion de la United Society of Pastel Artists 2010, en California, USA. Ya la habia puesto en este Blog hace unos meses, normalmente no repito pinturas, pero esta, si.

One of my favorite concepts or themes is the passage of time, transitions. Even though my concept stays the same, my subject matter could be members of my family, landscapes at different times of the day or the year, or abstracts. This pastel painting I'm sharing today, for example, was inspired by an old photograph of my son and I many years ago. When I found it, I painted this as my meditation on "the passage of time", my son being now a grown, successful man.
Uno de mis temas o conceptos favoritos es el paso del tiempo, transiciones. Aunque mi concepto sea el mismo, mi sujeto pueden ser miembros de mi familia, paisajes a distintas horas del dia o estaciones del ano, o abstractos. Esta pintura al pastel que comparto hoy, por ejemplo, fue inspirada por una vieja fotografia de mi hijo y yo hace muchos anos. Cuando la encontre, pinte esto como mi meditacion en "el paso del tiempo", siendo mi hijo ahora un hombre, con exito en su vida.

Marbella Garden View

Marbella Garden View, small watercolor from my journal, done last weekend in Marbella, Spain. I enjoyed sitting in the shade smelling the perfume of those big hanging Angel's trumpets. These flowers don't live long, yet while they are blooming, they are generous with their lovely scent. Some people are like that.
Esta pequena acuarela de mi cuaderno de viajes, la hice el fin de semana pasado en Marbella, Espana. Disfrute mucho sentarme a la sombra de esta planta "trompeta de angeles"? sintiendo su delicioso perfume. Estas flores no viven mucho tiempo, sin embargo son tan generosas con su esencia encantadora. Hay gente asi.

Today in Sevilla I saw an exhibit of Women in Black against the War. They trust the tenderness and solidarity of women to protest THE war, any war, all wars. It was a very touching exhibit.
Hoy en Sevilla he visto una exhibicion de Mujeres de Negro contra la Guerra. Ellas confian en la ternura y la solidaridad entre mujeres para protestar LA guerra, cualquier guerra, todas las guerras. Es una exhibicion que te llega al alma.
