L'Abbe Pierre, watercolor, 35x27 cm. SOLD.
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was restless, and he sought to reconcile the demands of commissioned portraiture with modern currents. Some days he painted for money, and some days he painted for fun. Due to the scandal of his painting "Madame X" (Virginie Amelie Avegno Gautreau) he retreated to London where he remained for the rest of his life.
