ROPA TENDIDA, watercolor on Yupo, 20x26 in (51x66 cm.) found a new home yesterday, in La Jolla, California. It was bought at the Juried March Exhibition of the San Diego Watercolor Society.
I painted this watercolor a few years ago, inspired by rooftops and hanging laundry in Lisbon, Portugal. I have "a thing" for rooftops and hanging laundry. Love them! I guess it reminds me of when I was a little girl in Mendoza and Córdoba, in Argentina. There is no nicer smell than the clothes from the line hanging in the sun, is there?

LA JOLLA SHORES, WINTER, watercolor on Aquaboard
LA JOLLA SHORES, WINTER, watercolor on Aquaboard, 14x18 in.
Available for purchase.
Driving down La Jolla Shores street last week, in La Jolla, California, I saw this magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. The trees are full of red, orange and yellow leaves, people walking and exercising. This is WINTER, for goodness sakes! Yet the colors are not winter-like. I painted this watercolor on an Aquaboard for watercolor, a new experience for me. It felt weird, but it took the watercolor well. Later I varnished it with spray varnish.

Richard Walker's Breakfast, ink and watercolor
Richard Walker's breakfast, in La Jolla, California, ink and watercolor in my sketchbook.
This morning we had a fabulous breakfast here. I did this quick sketch of the view I had from my table, after breakfast. Suddenly this handsome man came to our table and introduced himself: he was Richard Walker, the owner of this and other establishments! What a surprise! Apparently our waitress had told him I was sketching. Delicious super-breakfast!

Mirror, Mirror
Mirror, Mirror, pastel portrait, 20x16, available @La Jolla Art Association Gallery.
A few years ago, I asked my grand-daughter Emily to play with different hats and scarfs in front of the mirror, while I was taking pictures of her for future portraits. This is one of them. It is now on exhibition at La Jolla Art Association gallery, at 8100 Paseo del Ocaso, La Jolla, California. Come to the reception on Friday evening, from 6:30-8:00pm. There are other artists exhibiting, it is a beautiful show!
Today I painted several hours at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park, San Diego. I did three watercolors. After I photograph them, I will share them in the blog. This garden is beautiful, they are in the process of expanding it, so in the Spring 2013 it will be bigger, at different levels.

Paris, Eiffel Tower V
Paris, Eiffel Tower V, oil on canvas, 12x9 in. available at La Jolla Art Association Gallery, in La Jolla, California. Reception for this show is on Friday 21st, 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Come over with your friends! Art and wine go well together!
I read something quite interesting in the Pratique des Arts magazine, a French magazine similar to our Artist's magazine. It said: "What makes a painter different from another one is less her technique, and much more her personal vision of the world. That's what makes her unique." Milerid Mulick.

Paris, Eiffel Tower I
Paris, Eiffel Tower I, oil on canvas, 12x9 in, available, contact me.
This is one of three oil paintings in exhibition now at La Jolla Art Association Gallery, La Jolla, California. The Opening Reception is Friday 21st, from 6:30-8:00 pm. You are all invited! I hope to see you there!
I love to walk in Paris and find hidden, interesting views of the Eiffel Tower. I have sketched that tower at all times of the day, from a hundred different places. Here is another view! Enjoy! I usually sketch in pencil, pens, and watercolors, filling up many travel journals with my value sketches and watercolors. Then sometimes I do a larger painting in my studio.

The Cove, landscape/seascape
The Cove, watercolor, 14x20" (35x50cm.) Available. I painted this watercolor plein-air, standing near La Mano Masks in La Jolla, California, a few days ago. La Jolla Cove is a beautiful place in Southern California, near San Diego.
According to Ian Roberts, it's important to engage both horizontal and vertical lines of force. Our goal--he says--is "to orchestrate engagement, and have: strong value masses, subtle color intensities and harmonies, edge quality, and great drawing." Have I done all that in this painting? I'm not sure. You be the judge.

The Cove
The Cove, watercolor alla prima, 14x20". Available. Painted yesterday afternoon, from the balcony across the street from the cove at La Jolla, San Diego. Magnificent afternoon, warm, sunny, plenty of tourists walking around, and boats appeared on several occasions. This place is beautiful! Did you know that Nikki de Saint Phalle lived the last years of her life in San Diego, California? There are many of her "Nanas" and other sculptures here, it's worth a visit!

Paris View
Paris View, watercolor, 12x5" (30x13cm.) One of my Paris series. Sold yesterday at La Jolla Art Gallery, California.
In "Styles in Painting", Paul Zucker says: "originality develops only with growth". "Original forms of expression will arise under preassure of some urgent spiritual need." Food for thought.
