ROPA TENDIDA, watercolor on Yupo, 20x26 in (51x66 cm.) found a new home yesterday, in La Jolla, California. It was bought at the Juried March Exhibition of the San Diego Watercolor Society.

I painted this watercolor a few years ago, inspired by rooftops and hanging laundry in Lisbon, Portugal. I have "a thing" for rooftops and hanging laundry. Love them! I guess it reminds me of when I was a little girl in Mendoza and Córdoba, in Argentina. There is no nicer smell than the clothes from the line hanging in the sun, is there?

This watercolor is from a few years ago. It has been juried into the San Diego Watercolor Society a couple of years ago, then Gallery 21 in Baboa Park, and now into the Point Loma Credit Union watercolor exhibition. You can see it there until November 21st. There will be a reception on October 20th, 3-5 pm. You are all invited!!!!
Yupo is a material used as "paper" for watercolors, but it is actually not paper, it is 100% polypropylene. Since it does not absorb water or the pigment we use, the water and pigment just "sit there" until it dries by evaporation. The color stays much stronger on the surface due to lack of absorption, and it is relatively easy to take away pigment and leave the white of the surface in certain parts with a cotton Q-tip, or a wet brush.

Colliure is a very colorful and beautiful town in the south of France, close to the border with Spain. At the beginning of the 20th C. it was the last town reached by the French trains. This is where Fauvism was born. The art tour guides tell the story of Matisse escaping the art scene of Paris, taking the train the farthest it would go, stopping in Colliure. Then he invited Derain, and others followed. They went wild with colors, and Fauvism was born.

Rïse Parberry was this month's juror. "Tranquera" is based on sketches I did on location, and pictures taken at my friend's Lalo and Estela's Estancia in Villa Catalina, Córdoba, Argentina.

As I look at this painting of my parents, I remember my mother noticing that as you age, people no longer notice you, or value your opinion, you become invisible. So I paint, write, email, blog, publish, post, teach, and make my mark, my statement: "I am alive, I have ideas, I can produce, give, influence and affect others!"

The San Diego Watercolor Society has just published its first Quarterly. It is interesting, serious, informative, funny, and just plain fabulous! Check it out! Reading it, I was reminded of Julia Cameron's THE ARTIST'S WAY's description of the artist date: "Artist Dates fire up the imagination. They spark whimsy. They encourage play. Since art is about the play of ideas, they feed our creative work by replenishing our inner well of images and inspiration."

LE PONT NEUF, TOULOUSE, watercolor

Le Pont Neuf, Toulouse, watercolor, 14x20". Painted on location in Toulouse, France, about two months ago, this watercolor is in exhibition and for sale at the San Diego Watercolor Society during the month of December. This is in San Diego, California.

Tonight, at the reception,  I noticed a couple standing in front of my painting, so I approached them. They surprised me by telling me not only that they had recently been in Toulouse, but also in the area of the Pyrenees where I live part of the year, including Cauterets! They are bikers, and have biked up the mountains from Lourdes, to Cauterets. This is a feat that only expert bikers can achieve!

Painting with light: For shadows, always go to the light source, but reflections are always vertical. They follow different set of rules. Don't ever forget that we paint the ILLUSION of realism. Painted plein-air a couple of days ago, this is the view from the sidewalk in front of  SDAI, San Diego Art Institute, Museum of the Living Artist, where I am exhibiting some paintings. Tomorrow morning  I will be doing a demonstration for the San Diego Watercolor Society in the Alcazar Garden, next  to SDAI, from 9-10 am. Then everybody paints on their own, and we get together again at 12:00 noon for a critique of our work. Come paint with us!
