Chateau St. Marie, Luz St. Sauveur

Chateau St. Marie, Luz St. Sauveur, France. watercolor, 4x6" (10x15 cm.) Painted fully on location, like most of my small watercolors from my journals. Luz St Sauveur is a lovely small town in the Pyrenees in France, and there, on top of a hill, are these remnants of the Chateau St. Marie, with an open "door" to the sky. Quite lovely.
Encantador.

Bagneres de Bigorre, park

Bagneres de Bigorre, (France) park. inkwash, 4x6" (10x15 cm.)

I've finished reading TWO LIVES: A MEMOIR, by Vikram Seth. Mr. Seth is from India, and he tells the story of his uncle and aunt, in London, during the end of the second world war. His uncle, a dentist, had lost his right arm during the war. He survived a bombing, but now has to learn to live with his handicap, and to make a living "as is". His aunt is a Jewish German lady, much taller than her husband who has to live with the weight of the loss of her family in concentration camps. This "odd couple" love and care for each other. Mr. Seth's style is poetic and interesting. Two lives intertwined in the fabric of two different cultures and a world war.

Biarritz

Biarritz, watercolor, 4x6" (10x15cm.) Biarritz, France, on the Atlantic coast, where I was visiting with friends, offers a magnificent view of the sea.

Writers and painters are a different kind of explorers and adventurers. May be they have some of these, but what differentiates them, is that writers and painters look for less tangible things: they search emotions. "They have started the most useless of all battles: stop time." says Javier Reverte. When we write and when we paint, time is suspended in mid-air, and the feeling is so addictive, that we continue as long as we breathe. We continue trying to stop time by recording it on our canvases.

Mission Bay Friend

Mission Bay Friend, watercolor, 4.5x5.5" (11x13 cm.) Riding my bicycle yesterday along Mission Bay in San Diego, California, I stopped for a break and this watercolor. It was a warm, sunny day.

Last Thursday I attended a meeting of the United Society of Pastel Artists, in Orange County, California. Gary Blackwell did a demonstration of a pastel landscape, and shared some of his favorite phrases with us. Here are some of them:-- "There are no boring subjects, only boring artists." -- "When you don't know what you're doing you put it all in... later, you select the important." -- "Painting is easy when you don't know and very difficult when you do." Edgar Degas -- "Value does all the work and color gets all the glory."

En Route

En Route, small pencil sketch of my friend Marie Christine driving. I usually sketch my family and friends while they are busy in some activity. Like Joaquin Sorolla used to say, sketching keeps the hand warm.

I recently read LAS CHICAS DEL OLEO (Girls of the huile), by Isabel del Rio. This book talks about female painters and sculptors before 1789. The author cites an extensive list of female artists before the French Revolution, and claims that women were actually more free to dedicated themselves to artistic endeavors before than after 1789. She insists that Artemisia Gentileschi, Rosalba Carriera, and many others I don't have the room here to mention, were not exceptions. Isabel del Rio documents her thesis extensively, claiming that "it was not their time but ours the one that's interested in transmitting a negative view of women's past experiences in art".

Marina's Heroine

Marina's Heroine, pastel on Canson, 20x16" (50x40 cm.) When I asked my grandaughter Marina what would she like me to paint for her, anything she liked, she brought me a small picture of this Japanese character, a super-girl or wonder-girl, now very fashionable with female adolescents. So I painted her a larger version of the character, with pastels. Here it is!

Charlemagne, king of the Franks, had a deep respect for education. He loved to read, but could not write. When he tried to learn to write, he realized it would have been easier if he had been younger, so he set up a system to teach every child in his kingdom to write. "Take care to make no difference between the sons of serfs and of freemen" warned the king. Everybody studied grammar, music and arithmetic. Free public education had been born, at the end of the 8th Century.
