Negative Space: Although widely used when talking about painting, the term "negative" is misleading. Negative and positive go together like the inside and the outside of a cup. You can't have one without the other one. Yet, the outside is "negative" in relation to the inside, the real holding place. It is similar with pictures. A picture can't exist without its "negative" space. When you study a good painting, read also the background or negative space to learn about the positive or "real" picture.
Espacio Negativo: Aunque se usa mucho cuando uno habla de pintura, el termino "negativo" es un poco confuso. Negativo y positivo van juntos, como la parte de adentro y fuera de una taza. No se puede tener uno sin el otro. La parte de afuera es "negativa" en relacion con la parte de adentro, el lugar para contener. Es parecido con las pinturas. El positivo de una pintura no puede existir sin su espacio negativo. Cuando estudias una buena pintura, lee tambien el fondo o espacio negativo, para aprender sobre el espacio positivo, o verdadera pintura.
