Cuisine de Nat & Fred, watercolor, 4x6" (10x15cm.) As I paint everywhere I go, when I was in Chantilly and Paris last week, I did this small watercolor of my friend's kitchen.
Styles in Painting, by Paul Zucker, wonderful book. The author compares same genre paintings from different painters, and different times, sometimes different centuries. Great idea, amazing results! In the "Three Graces" category, for example, he compares "The Three Graces" in a Pompeiian mural from the year 70 A.D., with Raphael's, Botticelli's, Vasari's and Rubens' "Three Graces". Your homework: find and look at these paintings, and send me a message: which of the four painters I've mentioned copied almost exactly from the Pompeiian mural?
Cocina de Nat & Fred, acuarela. Como yo pinto en todas partes donde voy, cuando estuve en Chantilly y Paris la semana pasada, hize esta pequena acuarela de la cocina de mis amigos.
Styles in Painting, (Estilos en Pintura) de Paul Zucker, fantastico libro. El autor compara el mismo genero de pinturas de diferentes pintores y distintas epocas, a veces siglos. Gran idea, resultados asombrosos! En la categoria "Las Tres Gracias", por ejemplo, el compara "Las Tres Gracias" en un mural de Pompeya del ano 70, con "Las Tres Gracias" de Raphael, Botticelli, Vasari, y Rubens. Tu tarea: encuentra y mira con cuidado estas pinturas, y enviame un mensaje: cual de estos cuatro pintores que he mencionado copio casi exactamente del mural de Pompeya?

Jardin de Luxembourg, Paris

Jardin de Luxembourg, Paris. watercolor, 4x6" (10x15 cm.) Painted with joy after meeting my California friend Jan and her husband, and chatting about old times.
Afterwards I visited some art exhibits at various places within the Jardin de Luxembourg. I was impressed by Anna Husemoller Jeretic's exhibit of paintings and engravings. She's interested in art and ecology. I bought a small book from her: "L'Appel" or "The Call". She writes beautifully, and her message both in her essay and her paintings touched me deeply.

Luego visite varias exposiciones en distintas galerias de los Jardines de Luxembourg. Me impresiono la exhibicion de pinturas y grabados de Anna Husemoller Jeretic. Ella trabaja en arte y ecologia. Le compre un librito: "L'Appel" o "El Llamado". Escribe hermoso, y su mensaje tanto en su ensayo como en sus pinturas me llego al alma.

Notre Dame de Paris

Notre Dame de Paris, watercolor, 21x14cm., in one of my travel journals. I love travel journals, and sometimes one is too big for a particular bag, or for some other reason I use a different one. I was sitting at the cafe across from Notre Dame the other day, and...voila! a little watercolor! Enjoy!
Did you know that the monk Suger, in the middle of XIIth C. started the idea, in the Church of Saint Denis, in Paris, that light represented the essence of God? That idea started the construction of Gothic cathedrals. Light and height are the key of great cathedrals, whose intention was to proclaim God's glory.

Notre Dame de Paris, acuarela, en uno de mis cuadernos de viajes. Me encantan los cuadernos de viajes, y a veces alguno es demasiado grande para una bolsa que quiero llevar, o por alguna otra razon uso uno diferente. Esta acuarela la hice sentada al frente de Notre Dame el otro dia, y....voila! una acuarela! Disfruten!

Sabian que fue el abad Suger, a mediados del siglo XII quien comenzo la idea, en la Iglesia de Saint Denis, en Paris, que la luz representaba la esencia de Dios? Esa idea dio comienzo a la construccion de catedrales Goticas. La luz y la altura eran la clave de grandes catedrales, cuya intencion era la de proclamar la gloria de Dios.

Chateau de Chantilly II

Chateau de Chantilly II, watercolor, 6x4"=15x10 cm. Painted sitting on the lawn in front of the castle, after finishing a delicious picnic my friend Mireille had prepared for us.
Chantilly was left to the Institute of France by the last Conde d'Aumale, in the late 1800s. He donated the castle, the immense parks and forest surrounding it, the whole library and paintings collection,(which includes one Raphael, two Delacroix, four Ingres, one Rosa Bonheur) on the following conditions: 1, Nothing could be changed. 2, Nothing could be lent. 3, Nothing could be sold. 4, Nothing could be rented out. And it had to be shown to the public. That's the reason being in Chantilly makes me feel like a princess, elegance surrounded by a forest, 30 km. from Paris!

Chateau de Chantilly II, acuarela. Pintada sentada en la hierba al frente del castillo, despues de terminar el delicioso picnic que mi amiga Mireille habia preparado para nosotras.

Chantilly fue dejada al Instituto de Francia por el ultimo Conde d'Aumale, al final del 1800. El dono el castillo, el inmenso parque y el bosque que lo rodea, la coleccion entera de libros antiguos y la coleccion de pinturas (que incluye un Raphael, dos Delacroix, cuatro Ingres, un Rosa Bonheur) con las siguientes condiciones: 1. Nada se podia cambiar. 2, Nada se podia prestar. 3, Nada se podia vender. 4, Nada se podia alquilar. Y debia ser mostrado al publico. Por eso estar en Chantilly me hace sentir como una princesa, elegancia rodeada de bosque, a 30 km. de Paris!

La Cascade

Like some of the paintings published in the past few days, "La Cascade" is also part of the new solo exhibit at Bibliotheque Municipale d'Argeles-Gazos, France, August 1-20th, 2011. Art Barter is not a new concept. Tracy Emin exchanged a piece of art for 30 hs. of French classes, in London. Two British art merchants did an entire show on the basis of exchange of goods for paintings: offer can be: hotel rooms, massages, trips, you name your offer, the artist decides if it is acceptable. I love the idea! Would you like to make me an offer for a painting?

Arte por Trueque no es un concepto nuevo. Tracy Emin cambio una obra de arte suya por 30 hs. de clases de frances, en London. Dos comerciantes de arte britanicas hicieron una exhibicion completa sin precios, solo en base a intercambios: las ofertas pueden ser noches de hotel, masages, viajes, lo que se te ocurra, o tengas para cambiar, la artista decide si es aceptable. Coeur de la Ville

Coeur de la Ville, watercolor, 55x75 cm. The title: "Heart of the town" makes reference to the church in this town, Argeles-Gazost, in the French Pyrenees, on a market day. Everybody is here. This is one of the paintings in my upcoming solo show in the library of Argeles-Gazost: "De l'Argentine `a Argeles: Poesie des Territoires", August 1-20th. Coeur de la Ville, acuarela. El titulo :"Corazon de la ciudad" hace referencia a la iglesia en este pueblo, Argeles-Gazost, en los Pirineos franceses, en el dia del mercado al aire libre. Composite Landscape

Composite Landscape, watercolor, 21x29cm. I painted this watercolor sitting in the back of my friends Danielle and Herve's car, chatting with them, while we were driving from Cauterets to Pau, in the French Pyrenees, one day last week, most of the time in the rain. I added a tree here, and another tree from 2 km. later, whenever I saw something  I liked to add, that's why I call it a "composite landscape".
For Painters: two ways of keeping your acrylics light and bright: 1: add some Zinc White, which is more delicate than Titanium White. Zinc is a transparent pigment, and creates a more vibrant color. 2: apply a Titanium White underlayer to the color you want to use. It adds intensity to the color you apply over it.

Paisaje agregado, acuarela. Pinte esta acuarela sentada atras en el auto de mis amigos Danielle y Herve, charlando con ellos, mientras ibamos desde Cauterets a Pau, en los Pirineos franceses, un dia la semana pasada, la mayor parte del tiempo con lluvia. Yo agregaba un arbol aqui, y otro de dos km. mas tarde, cuando veia algo que me gustaba, por eso lo llamo: "paisaje agregado".

Para Pintores: dos maneras de mantener los colores de tus acrilicos luminosos y brillantes: 1: agregal Blanco de Zinc, que es mas delicado que el Blanco de Titanio. El zinc es un pigmento transparente, y crea colores mas vibrantes. 2: aplica una capa de Blanco de Titanio abajo del color que quieres usar. Blanco de Titanio agrega intensidad al color que apliques encima.

Isard

Isard, watercolor, 21x14 cm. The "isard" is an animal typical in the French Pyrenees, similar to the goat, with beatifully colored skin. I have seen many in the mountains here, but this one did not pose for me long enough for a watercolor. I took pictures, and painted it later, even if it is a small and fairly quick watercolor.
For Artists in the U.S: I was recently reading that our work has copyright protection for 70 years after our death. Also, that copyright law states that we retain copyright to our work after it is sold. The customer purchases the original, but not the rights to the reproduction of the original.

Isard, acuarela. El "isard" es un animal tipico en los Pirineos franceses, parecido a la cabra, con piel de hermosos colores. He visto muchos en las montanas aqui, pero este no poso el tiempo suficiente para hacer una acuarela. Tome fotos, y lo pinte mas tarde, aunque es una acuarela pequena y relativamente rapida.

Para Artistas en los EE.UU.: Hace poco lei que nuestro trabajo tiene proteccion "copyright" por 70 anos despues de nuestra muerte. Tambien, la ley de derechos de autor dice que mantenemos los derechos despues de haber vendido el original. Nuestro cliente compra la obra original, pero no los derechos a reproducirla.

Invitation

Invitation, watercolor, 26x36 cm. This is one of the watercolors in my next individual exhibition in Argeles-Gazost: "De l'Argentine `a Argeles: Poesie des Territoires", August 1st-20th., 2011.
Man Ray and Lee Miller, teacher and student turned lovers, resulted in some of the most powerful work of each artist's career and helped shape the course of modern art. Together, they lived in Paris and became giants of the European Surrealist movement.

Invitacion, acuarela. Esta es una de las acuarelas en mi exhibicion individual en Argeles-Gazost: "De la Argentina a Argeles: Poesia de los territorios". Agosto 1-20 2011.

Man Ray y Lee Miller, pareja de maestro y alumno que se volvieron amantes, resulto en  el mejor trabajo de ambos en toda su carrera, y contribuyo a dar forma al futuro del arte moderno. Juntos vivieron en Paris y llegaron a ser gigantes del movimiento Surrealista Europeo.

Toujours Bienvenue

Toujours Bienvenue, watercolor, 21x14 cm. Painted from a sign in Gavarnie, French Pyrenees, indicating a rest place for the walkers on the Chemin de Compostelle. This road to Santiago de Compostela, in northwest Spain, has been used for centuries. In the Middle Ages, Christians did the walk following their faith. Today, the attitude has changed, for some it is still religion, for many others the source of their strength is social, sportive, curiosity, spiritual, or adventurous.
Toujours Bienvenue, (Siempre Bienvenido) acuarela. Esta acuarela fue pintada inspirada en un letrero en metal en Gavarnie, en los Pirineos franceses, indicando un lugar para descansar en el Camino de Compostela. Este camino, en noroeste de Espana, ha sido usado por siglos. En la Edad Media, los Cristianos lo hacian siguiendo su fe. Hoy, la actitud ha cambiado, para algunos todavia es religiosa, para muchos otros la fuente de su fortaleza es social, deportiva, curiosidad, espiritual, o de aventura.

Deux Euros 50 centimes le Kilo, watercolor, 21x14cm. Open-air markets in France are a tradition, they are also more abundant and crowded in summer. This painting was done at the market in Argeles-Gazost, in the Pyrenees, a few days ago.
More on Color Temperature: The temperature of a color contributes to the moods and emotions associated with colors. Warm colors are considered exciting, cozy, earthy and energizing, while Cool colors are considered to be sedate, meditative, soothing and calming...You choose if you want a warm or a cool painting, or a balance of warm and cool colors.

Dos Euros y 50 centavos el Kilo, acuarela. Mercados abiertos al aire libre son una tradicion en Francia, tambien son mas abundantes y llenos de gente en verano. Esta pintura la hize en el mercado de Argeles-Gazost, en los Pirineos, hace unos dias.

Mas sobre Temperatura del Color: La temperatura de un color contribuye al modo y emocion asociada con los colores. Los colores calidos se consideran excitantes, dando una sensacion de comodidad, de hogar y tierra, y llenos de nergia. Los colores frios se consideran sedantes, calmantes, ayudan a la meditacion...Tu eliges si quieres una pintura fria o calida, o un balance de colores frios y calidos.

A Media Luz in Toulouse

A Media Luz, acrylic, 75x55 cm. (30x22") one of seven paintings I'll exhibit this coming weekend at the International Tango Postale Festival in Toulouse, in the South of France. There will be tango dancing demonstrations, classes,  music, and other tango-related activities all over downtown, from the 6th to 10th July. The main activities and art exhibition will be at the prestigious Salle Mermoz. On Saturday, La Orquesta Tipica Imperial, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, will be playing. Eye of the Stone

Sketch-La Pila del Pato

La Pila del Pato, watercolor in my sketchbook. This is a fountain in the Plaza San Leandro, in Sevilla. The "plaza " surrounded by buildings hosting apartments, Manuel's Restaurant, the Arco Iris Foundation, and Galeria Murnau, is shaded by beautiful trees, and the sound of the water in the fountain adds to a feeling of peace and rest.
La Pila del Pato, acuarela en mi cuadernillo de viajes. Esta fuente esta en al Plaza San Leandro, en Sevilla. La plaza, rodeada de edificios de departamentos, el Restaurante de Manuel, la Fundacion Arco Iris, y la Galeria Murnau, esta sombreada por hermosos arboles, y el sonido del agua de la fuente contribuye a una sensacion de paz y descanso.

Christian Boltanski, who this year represented France at the Biennale de Venezia, and is one of the most prestigious contemporary artists, has said: "Art is our protection against Time, our fight against Oblivion, our lost battle against Death and its tragique entourage." I guess he knows my heart and my secret.

Christian Boltanski, quien este ano represento Francia en la Bienal de Venecia, y es uno de los artistas contemporaneos mas prestigiosos, ha dicho: "El arte es nuestra proteccion contra el Tiempo, nuestra pelea contra el Olvido, y nuestra batalla perdida contra la Muerte y su cortejo." Creo que conoce mi corazon y mi secreto.

Sketch: Cabopino, Marbella

Sketch: Cabopino, Marbella, is part of the series of watercolors in my small travel journal. I started this journal a couple of weeks ago, just before leaving Lourdes, France, by train to Toulouse, where I took the plane for Sevilla, Spain. Wherever I go, I do small watercolors in my journal  when something strikes me. And so we go...through life, along roads less travelled, inside dim lit tunnels, on bumpy paths, under shady bridges, or over rooftops and skyscrapers...until we land home, where we belong.

Bosquejo: Cabopino, Marbella, es parte de una serie de acuarelas en mi pequeno cuaderno de pinturas de viaje. Comenze este cuaderno hace un par de semanas, justo antes de partir de Lourdes, Francia, en tren a Toulouse, donde tome el avion a Sevilla, Espana. Adondequiera que voy, dibujo y pinto pequenas acuarelas en mi cuaderno de viajes cuando algo me llama la atencion. Y asi vamos...por la vida, a lo largo de caminos poco conocidos, dentro de tuneles con poca luz, marchando por caminitos rocosos, bajo puentes sombreados, o sobre techos y  rascacielos...hasta que aterrizamos en nuestro hogar, donde pertenecemos.

Ma Chimere

Ma Chimere, oil on canvas, 70x90 cm. is one of 9 paintings of mine at the show opening today at the Centro Cultural de Monforte de Lemos, in Galicia, Spain. All 9 oils represent my vision of life in the French Pyrenees mountains.When I paint, I think of the poem by Gerardo Diego:
"my hand tells of truths and joys
that my tongue is not able to articulate"   (translation mine)

Mi Quimera, oleo sobre tela, es una de 9 pinturas mias en la exhibicion que abre hoy en el Centro Cultural de Monforte de Lemos, en Galicia, Espana. Los 9 oleos representan mi vision de la vida en los Pirineos franceses. Cuando pinto, pienso del poema de Gerardo Diego:
