MELANCOLIA, acrylic

Melancolia, tango dancers series, acrylic , 30x22 in.

I believe that studying and painting from life is very important, actually essential, to being a good artist. I promote art education through teaching, lecturing, doing demonstrations, and publications through my blog and books. I truly believe that passing along information and what I've learned from my own observation and experience is my obligation to generations of artists to come.

TANGO EN PLAZA DEL ARBOL, BUENOS AIRES, watercolor

Tango en Plaza del Arbol, Buenos Aires, 4x6 watercolor
South America Cruise series # 42

Another day in Buenos Aires, Argentina, we went to San Telmo, visited the stores of antiquarians, and sat at Plaza del Arbol, where we had a drink sitting under a big tree, while enjoying the tango dancers. Very relaxing!

TANGO AT THE END OF THE WORLD, watercolor

Tango at the End of the World, watercolor, 12x9 in.
South America Cruise series # 38

Hanging out in Ushuaia, tango dancers caught our eyes, our imagination, and our cameras! It was really fun to hear tango music again, after so many years out of Argentina. This was our last day "at the end of the world". After cruising for 4 weeks going south on the Pacific, from now on we would start going north on the Atlantic. Very exciting! The daily paintings, of course, never stopped. What else did I have to do?

TANGO EN USHUAIA, watercolor

Tango en Ushuaia, Argentina, watercolor, 4x6 in.
South American Cruise watercolor series # 37

At the end of the world, people dance tango on the street, or a sidewalk, or a park, dressed sexy and elegant, for the entertainment of tourists and passers-by. A joy to watch them, and give them a well -deserved tip inside the man's hat usually laid down carefully nearby. Another wonderful moment in Ushuaia, land of many contrasts.

Wine and Tango

Wine and Tango, acrylic on canvas, 20x16". Available for auction at the San Diego Women's Museum upcoming festival. More information in my next blog. Stay tuned!
Renoir said: "Black and white are  not colors." Even today, many art schools frown upon the use of black.Yet black has existed in paintings since Altamira and Lascaux, to contemporary work. Near the end of his life, Renoir admitted: "It took me forty years to discover that the queen of all colors is black." Better late than never..I say.

Tango en La Dourade, Toulouse

Tango en La Dourade, Toulouse, watercolor, 41x31cm." La Dourade" is a park/beach/recreation area at the side of La Garonne, the river along which Toulouse was built. During the Tango Festival 2011, a few days ago, they had a platform for tango dancing under the trees, overlooking the beautiful river where people were doing water-sports. For me, born and raised in Argentina, to hear tangos in such a combination of places, in France, and to see so many French people enjoying the music and dancing the tango, it was sometimes emotional, and all the time beautiful.

Recordando a Piazzolla

Recordando a Piazzolla, watercolor, 36x26 cm.
I was inspired by the music of Piazzolla, and the works of Toulouse-Lautrec for the dancer Loie Fuller. He was able to capture a feeling of weightlessness and light that was the leading feature in Loie Fuller's dance act. In one of her famous routine's "The Lily of the Nile", she wore 500 sq. meters of silk. My reaction to a painter of 120 years ago and a musician of 60 years ago, could be the subject of Synaesthesia= the study of simultaneous response of two or more senses to the same stimulus. Wait a minute! This is the opposite: two sources, one reaction! What would this be called? I call it "Having fun with watercolors".
Recordando a Piazzolla, acuarela.

Sketch-Tango Postale

Sketch-Tango Postale, small watercolor in my travel journal, while sitting with my tango paintings exhibit at Tango Postale International Festival in Toulouse, France, last weekend, July 8,9,10.  Lots of people dancing tango at Salle Mermoz, great festival. I attended a conference about Astor Piazzolla, the great bandoneon player and composer, born in Buenos Aires, raised in New York, and greatly influenced by Ravel, Stravinsky, and American Jazz. No wonder I loved his tangos so much!
