Composite Landscape

Composite Landscape, watercolor, 21x29cm. I painted this watercolor sitting in the back of my friends Danielle and Herve's car, chatting with them, while we were driving from Cauterets to Pau, in the French Pyrenees, one day last week, most of the time in the rain. I added a tree here, and another tree from 2 km. later, whenever I saw something  I liked to add, that's why I call it a "composite landscape".
For Painters: two ways of keeping your acrylics light and bright: 1: add some Zinc White, which is more delicate than Titanium White. Zinc is a transparent pigment, and creates a more vibrant color. 2: apply a Titanium White underlayer to the color you want to use. It adds intensity to the color you apply over it.
Paisaje agregado, acuarela.

Isard

Isard, watercolor, 21x14 cm. The "isard" is an animal typical in the French Pyrenees, similar to the goat, with beatifully colored skin. I have seen many in the mountains here, but this one did not pose for me long enough for a watercolor. I took pictures, and painted it later, even if it is a small and fairly quick watercolor.
For Artists in the U.S: I was recently reading that our work has copyright protection for 70 years after our death. Also, that copyright law states that we retain copyright to our work after it is sold. The customer purchases the original, but not the rights to the reproduction of the original.
Isard, acuarela.

Toujours Bienvenue

Toujours Bienvenue, watercolor, 21x14 cm. Painted from a sign in Gavarnie, French Pyrenees, indicating a rest place for the walkers on the Chemin de Compostelle. This road to Santiago de Compostela, in northwest Spain, has been used for centuries. In the Middle Ages, Christians did the walk following their faith. Today, the attitude has changed, for some it is still religion, for many others the source of their strength is social, sportive, curiosity, spiritual, or adventurous.
Toujours Bienvenue, (Siempre Bienvenido) acuarela.

This is a town in the French Pyrenees.
Bigas Luna, Spanish painter and movie director, has said: "Time is a curious thing: I have the same time as everybody else, my days also have 24 hours, and I can paint, direct movies, and do many things that other people say they don't have time to do. It is a personal choice." I agree.

Open-air markets in France are a tradition, they are also more abundant and crowded in summer. This painting was done at the market in Argeles-Gazost, in the Pyrenees, a few days ago.

Warm colors are considered exciting, cozy, earthy and energizing, while Cool colors are considered to be sedate, meditative, soothing and calming...You choose if you want a warm or a cool painting, or a balance of warm and cool colors.

Brioude sketch: view from La Vieille Auberge

Brioude sketch: View from La Vieille Auberge, France: watercolor, 15x10cm. in my travel journal. I painted it sitting on my first floor balcony.
"Temperature" is the relative warmth or coolness of a color. "Warm" are colors with a yellow component, or any yellow variety. "Cool" are colors with a blue component, or any variety of blue. When in doubt, ask yourself if the color has more yellow or blue in it.

Sketch: Brioude, France

Sketch: Brioude, France.   10x7cm. Quick watercolor in my travel journal, while waiting for a "gallete". A gallete is a crepe (thin pancakes) with ham, cheese and/or some other things like mushroom, onions, tomatoes, etc. making it a meal. Delicious! I went to Brioude for the Biennal International d'Aquarelle, and saw many beautiful pieces by very talented artists. A real treat!
Bosquejo: Brioude, France.

La Dourade" is a park/beach/recreation area at the side of La Garonne, the river along which Toulouse was built. During the Tango Festival 2011, a few days ago, they had a platform for tango dancing under the trees, overlooking the beautiful river where people were doing water-sports. For me, born and raised in Argentina, to hear tangos in such a combination of places, in France, and to see so many French people enjoying the music and dancing the tango, it was sometimes emotional, and all the time beautiful.

Recordando a Piazzolla

Recordando a Piazzolla, watercolor, 36x26 cm.
I was inspired by the music of Piazzolla, and the works of Toulouse-Lautrec for the dancer Loie Fuller. He was able to capture a feeling of weightlessness and light that was the leading feature in Loie Fuller's dance act. In one of her famous routine's "The Lily of the Nile", she wore 500 sq. meters of silk. My reaction to a painter of 120 years ago and a musician of 60 years ago, could be the subject of Synaesthesia= the study of simultaneous response of two or more senses to the same stimulus. Wait a minute! This is the opposite: two sources, one reaction! What would this be called? I call it "Having fun with watercolors".
Recordando a Piazzolla, acuarela.

Sketch-Tango Postale

Sketch-Tango Postale, small watercolor in my travel journal, while sitting with my tango paintings exhibit at Tango Postale International Festival in Toulouse, France, last weekend, July 8,9,10.  Lots of people dancing tango at Salle Mermoz, great festival. I attended a conference about Astor Piazzolla, the great bandoneon player and composer, born in Buenos Aires, raised in New York, and greatly influenced by Ravel, Stravinsky, and American Jazz. No wonder I loved his tangos so much!

Watercolor, 19x13cm. painted alla prima, sitting in front of Cauterets City Hall in 2008. I teach art classes in the Fall there.
I've been reading about the earliest painters on the walls of caverns. According to Gregory Curtis in Los Pintores de las Cavernas, Henri Breuil, priest and expert in prehistory, insinuated that religion owes its existence to art. He thought religion started in the form of hunting rituals, after art got established by the making of masks and costumes. Everywhere: Lascaux, Altamira, and many others caves, "if there is no hunting, there is no mural art".

Croquis: View de Cauterets, small watercolor in my travel journal while resting from my walk around town. This view is from the "Park de Nature", on the left as you are entering Cauterets from Argeles-Gazost.
Gabriela Gonzalez Delloso said in the May 2011 "Artist's" Magazine: "The act of painting a scene or even a simple figure convincingly is an amazing thing. To do it really well is like magic."

Rider in Blue, Gavarnie

Rider in Blue, Gavarnie. watercolor on Yupo, 25x38cm. Of course the title is a take from Kandinsky's "Blue Rider"! this poor rider is on a donkey in the French Pyrenees, with the Cirque de Gavarnie with the longest waterfall in Europe behind him. Kids are playing in the river, hikers are walking away. It's a summer afternoon.
Watercolor does very interesting things on Yupo. Yupo is soft like paper, but it's not paper: polypropilene I think they said. It does not absorb the water, you have to let it dry flat, as the water evaporates all the pigment rests on the surface, since nothing is absorbed, like in watercolor paper. The result is brighter colors; it works best in dry climate, since it takes longer to dry.

Autumn `a Cauterets, France

Autumn `a Cauterets, (France). This watercolor, 21x14cm., was painted from the view point of Pauze, an old site of thermal waters now closed. The 15 minute walk up is very accessible from (behind) the Thermes de Cesar and the modern and beautiful Thermes Ludique de Rocher. The view of the town of Cauterets is magnificent from there, with the church Our Lady of Cauterets in front. The motto in Cauterets, is "`A Caoutares tout que garech", in Occitain, the ancient native language, meaning: "In Cauterets everything heals." Come visit us! You'll be healed.
Ven a visitarnos! Te curaras de todo.
