The Eye of the Stone

The Eye of the Stone, acrylic on paper, 24x19" (60x47cm.)

I show my struggle, in opposition to classical art, where everything has pristine effect. In contemporary art you want to show the struggle. I like to see behind the curtain, to see the process. There is some writing crossed out in this painting, which is all about struggle and pain. After recuperating from passing a kidney stone earlier this year, I made two paintings about this event, "Falling Stones", (Juror's Commendation Award, SDWS March 2010) and this one, "Eye of the Stone".

Les Toits d'Autumn, watercolor on Yupo, 68x50 cm., commissioned.

Much can be learned by looking at and studying paintings. Since so many important works of art are in Europe, I highly recommend travel and study in Europe. Nothing can compare to actually seeing and experiencing a painting, no matter how good the reproduction.

Senegalese Workers

Senegalese Workers, watercolor, 4x6" (10x15cm.), 2009.

"From the age of 6 to 14 I took violin lessons but had no luck with my teachers, for whom music did not transcend mechanical practicing. I really began to learn only after I had fallen in love with Mozart's sonatas. The attempt to reproduce their singular grace compelled me to improve my technique. I believe, on the whole, that love is a better teacher than sense of duty." Albert Einstein.
Alberto Einstein.

Anniversary

Anniversary, watercolor, 18x14" (45x35cm.)

"All people are wounded, but most of us cover it up. Everybody has pain, and because the cancer retreat participants can't cover up their woundedness now that they have cancer, they can trust each other. I can trust another person only if I can sense that they, too, have woundedness, have pain, have fear." Bill Moyers interview with Rachel Naomi Remens.

Sunset in Marbella

Sunset in Marbella, watercolor, 6x9" (15x22cm.) This is a view from a beach 3 km. further East from downtown Marbella, Spain.

"Some say the creative life is in ideas, some say it is in doing. It seems to be in most instances in simply being. It is not virtuosity...it is the love of something, having so much love for something--whether a person, a word, an image, an idea, the land, or humanity--that all that can be done with the overflow is to create. It is not a matter of wanting to, not a singular act of will; one solely must. " Clarissa Pinkola Estes, "Women Who Run With The Wolves".

Trust

Trust, watercolor, 7x5" (17x12cm.)

"The boat I travel in is called 'Surrender'. My two oars are Instant Forgiveness and Gratitude, complete gratitude for the gift of love. I am thankful for the experience of this life, for the opportunity to dance. I get angry, I get angry, I get mad, but as soon as I remind myself, I put my oars in the water, I forgive."
Balbir Matbur, founder of Trees for Life.

The Mother's Song, an Inuit song:
It is so still in the house.
There is a calm in the house;
The snowstorm wails out there,
and the dogs are rolled up with snouts under the tail.
My little boy is sleeping on the ledge,
On his back he lies, breathing through his open mouth.
Hi little stomach is bulging round -
Is it strange if I start to cry with joy?

Amore

Amore, watercolor and acrylic, 10x8" (25x20 cm.)
Again, Barbara Kingsolver's use of words is magic. Another example from La Lacuna: "The indians were walking into the vanishing point of their future." She's using the language of art, to explain politics and philosophy.

Lunch in Tuscany

Lunch in Tuscany, watercolor, 20x14", exhibited at the San Clemente Art Gallery in April 2008.

According to Barbara Kingsolver in The Lacuna, Friday Kahlo has said: "To stop painting would feel like being dead." and she has also said: "I think an artist has to tell the truth. You have to use your craft very well and have a lot of discipline for it, but mostly to be a good artist you have to know something that is true."

Alegro in Trentino

Alegro in Trentino, watercolor, 6x9" (15x22cm.) Exhibited at the San Diego Watercolor Society in April 2008, and at the San Diego Hospice Art Gallery in February 2009.

Barbara Kingsolver, in The Lacuna, says: "Imagine being able to tell such stories, whispering miracles into people's brains! To live by imagination alone, and get paid for it."

L'Ete `a Cauterets

L'Ete `a Cauterets, watercolor, 10x7" (25x17 cm.) Exhibited at the San Diego Watercolor Society in February 2009.

Barbara Kingsolver, in The Lacuna, says: "He must have sunrise in his pockets and mercy in his shoes." What a beautiful thing to say of somebody. Pure poetry, it says so much about somebody with so little information. It's the dream I've always had for my children.

New Cosmos IV

New Cosmos IV, acrylic and paper on canvas, 20x20cm. This is the second of the paintings accepted at the International Contemporary Art Exhibit in Barcelona, Spain. The opening reception is September 17th, 2010, in the Patricia Munoz Galeria, Barcelona, Spain.

Matisse used extremes of color without losing sight of the fact that the goal of art is harmony. He made many monumental compositions dominated by a single color, which he likened to musical compositions (like Kandinsky). His first teacher was Bouguereau, who was full of rules. He changed to Gustave Moreau, who let him develop his own style. His third mentor was Camille Pissarro, you told him: "dont' proceed by rules and principles, but paint what you observe and feel."

Today, a bit of history: Oil painting was invented in the 15th C. by the Flemish Van Eyck (1390-1441). Until then, tempera had been the most common medium to use. Tempera is pigment + egg yolk + water. It dried with cracking. Van Eyck discovered that mixing pigment with linseed oil, paint dried without cracking!

Je me laisse emporter

Je me laisse emporter, watercolor, 36x26 cm.

This painting has a black (almost) umbrella. I didn't really use black, but a combination of the darkest brown and the darkest blue, which produces this "almost black" for watercolors. Matisse was not afraid of using black in his oils. Matisse's ability of making black work convinced Renoir that Matisse was an artist of note. The impressionists usually avoided black, but the problems that black represents attracted Renoir.

Working in stages is important. Normal Rockwell, Degas, Dr. Seuss, Fragonard, William Blake, worked in stages, and practiced, practiced, practiced. Make your art spontaneous: paint it 10 times for practice, then another time for spontaneity.

Beaux Esprits

Beaux Esprits, watercolor, 40x30 cm.

"To succeed, it takes a lifestyle" Heard in a class by Marshall Vandruff, in California. Also: "If you're going to be creative, you must walk at your own rhythm", and "The joy lies in the process, not in the achievement." all these sayings go very well with Paul Cezanne's "Pleasure must be found in studying". I believe that the greatest achievers have found a way to make WORK into PLAY. Our creative projects are like our children: enjoy them!

As I have said before, I've selected expressions from Moliere's "L'Ecole des Femmes" for all the titles of the works in this exhibition in Cauterets, France. The visitors to the exhibit are mostly French, and know the story very well. They are also here in town and can relate to the views of the town and the mountains. For you, my viewers abroad, I'll explain: This is a watercolor of a building in town with very exotic towers, because a Russian Princess came to Cauterets at the end of the XIXth Century and had it built like that. She's the "heroine of all times", since the beautiful building rests as witness of her passage in Cauterets.

L'Aventure Propice

L'Aventure Propice, watercolor, 50x36 cm. Inspired by walks in the French Pyrenees in the fall...

Things we need: 1) a place to work. Territory is important. If we don't have it we lose creativity. 2) a time to work. Schedule your time in your studio. Have a ritual, consistency, then work hard. 3) a job to do, even if it's dormant. 4) a list of questions. "Those who wish to succeed must ask the right preliminary questions". Aristotle. Aristoteles.

Ah...Coquine!

Ah...Coquine! watercolor, 40x30cm. This is one of eight watercolors I'm presenting in the solo show: "Chimeres", opening today, September 1st, at the Bibliotheque Municipale de Cauterets, France.

Francis Ford Coppola and other movie directors, have this problem: If they do not plan, they enjoy the creative moment, but they lose money and time due to lack of planning. On the other hand, if we plan everything, it freezes de moment. Spontaneity is emotional and moods fluctuate. But Marshall Vandruff says: "Your talent is not in your intellect. It's in your impulses!" Hurray!! " Hurray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
