I'd like to recommend the book LA BELLE CHOCOLATIERE, by Bernadette Pecassou. (The beautiful Madame Chocolate) I don't know if there is a translation in English. It is the story of how women created the city that is Lourdes (France) today. At the beginning (late 19th C.) there were rich women and poor women, but as Bernadette Soubirous's claims of seeing the virgin spread, and more and more people came to Lourdes, the situation changed completely. People needed a place to rest, and to eat. The women of Lourdes got together. Women of all social classes became united and transformed a village into the international city Lourdes is today. The title of the book refers to Sophie Paillhe, the wife of the chocolate maker in town.
