El Jardin de Sorolla, Madrid, 5x7" (12x17 cm.) This small watercolor from my journal I painted last week at Sorolla's house and museum in Madrid, Spain. I was happy to learn that Joaquin Sorolla also used the small format very often, and he recommended its use, as entertainment, experimentation, and to "warm the hand". He rarely used it as preparation for bigger compositions. The main characteristic of the small format is its speed, you can do a quick sketch in just a few minutes. Sorolla was a great defender of plein-air painting. His main obsession: to capture the light.
